what if i call 911 on accident?

If you call 911 by accident, we urge you to please stay on the line.

Us dispatchers will still have to ask your location, name and a few other questions to ensure that you are safe and no true emergency exists before disconnecting the call. If after we are done gathering information if we still feel that there are suspicious circumstances or if we are concerned for your safety we may still send law enforcement to check on you.

If for any reason you hang up before we are able to speak to you then we have no way of knowing if you are okay or not. With that being said we will be attempting to call you or if we can determine your location we will send law enforcement to check on you.

What information will 911 need to know when I call?

When you call 9-1-1, we ask that you provide us with the main four W’s to get help on the way:

  • Where: We are needing the exact address or location of the emergency taking place.
  • What: What is the nature of the emergency? This is the basic question we ask at the beginning of a call to determine who and what resources you will need.
  • Who: We will ask for a good phone number to call you back on, your name or any party involved, we may also ask for descriptions to assist responders.
  • When: It makes a difference if the incident is occurring right now or happened an hour ago, so a time frame is important.

More questions will follow but they vary depending on the emergency as all emergencies are different, these four W’s are just the first main questions we will ask on every call to get help started your way. We know that it can be frustrating to answer all the questions that we ask but in all cases, remember the most important thing you can do when calling 9-1-1 is to LISTEN CAREFULLY and answer all questions as accurately as you can.

can you help unlock my vehicle?

We have all been there, the dreaded call you have to make after locking your keys in your vehicle, but there are a couple requirements we seek when you call for help in this situation.

The dispatcher will ask:

  • Is the vehicle registered in Hancock County?
  • Is the registered owner of the vehicle a resident of Hancock County?

If both answers are yes, if resources allow we may be able to accommodate this request, but if one of them are no we will refer you to call a Triple A service or locksmith to assist you.

Keep in mind our Officers may be busy at the time that you call so the response time may vary.
